As we traveled through the Midwest, the scenery was definitely different. The countryside was speckled with wind turbines. Wind power is the largest renewable energy source in the United States that provides more than 20% of the electricity generated in the Midwest.
The turbine turns wind into electricity. The big blades spin around a rotor, which in turn spins a generator, which creates electricity.
- The blade length ranges from 116 feet to 170 feet
- The blade is as wide as the wingspan of a jumbo jet
- The blade diameter ranges from 4 to 11 feet
- Each blade weighs about 8,000 pounds
- They are approximately 26 stories high
- In Iowa there are more than 3,400 wind turbines across 33 counties.
